Guardian Ad Litem of the Big Bend, Second Circuit Citizens who volunteer to become part of an advocacy program to represent the best interests of abused/neglected children who are the subject of court proceedings; A GAL is a representative for the child before the court, social service agencies, and community and are trained/supervised by program staff. A GAL is anyone w/ common sense, good judgment and character, who cares and is able to give time to help a child. Certification process includes completing a written application, background screening, reference checks, personal interview, and 30 hrs of training to include courtroom observation. Advocating for the best interests of children who are alleged to be abused, neglected, abandoned, and who are involved in court proceedings. . Legal Services of North Florida Provides civil legal services to low-income persons for civil and domestic cases. Also, Title III provides for legal assistance as one supportive service that may be made available to older individuals. LSNF deals with cases such as consumer, public assistance benefits (SSI, SSID, food stamps, and TANF), landlord/tenant problems, and family law assistance in cases of abuse. Public Defender's Office, 2nd Judicial Circuit, Leon County The Public Defender's Office in Leon County provides legal representation in felony and misdemeanor cases, juvenile, mental health commitment cases, traffic cases, and criminal appeals. The office has a 24-hour answering service. Clients must be determined to be indigent in court before the Public Defender can begin representation. The Florida Bar The Florida Bar Lawyer Referral Service refers lawyers to the public. Lawyers of the service have agreed to provide half-hour office consultations for no more than $25. The service also provides low fee, elderly, disability law, and AIDS law panels for persons who qualify. The half-hour office consultation for these panels are free.
